AI offers incredible potential, but it also presents unique risks for women.

A recent report by McKinsey Global Institute estimates that by 2030, AI and automation could force between 40 million and 160 million women to move to roles that require higher-level skills.

This shift comes at a time when gender discrimination remains prevalent in hiring, promotions, and everyday workplace interactions.

The problem often begins with biased training data—AI systems mirror the biases of their creators. With women making up just 12% of AI researchers and 6% of software developers, the resulting technologies may not accurately reflect or serve women’s needs.

Women remain underrepresented across AI and tech fields, holding only 22% of AI-related roles. At the leadership level, the numbers are even starker—women account for just 8% of Chief Technology Officers (CTOs) in the U.S., meaning critical decisions about AI implementation are being made without women’s perspectives.

This underrepresentation extends beyond roles and positions. AI often operates as a “black box,” making it difficult to understand or challenge biased decisions. The lack of transparency and accountability in these systems further exacerbates existing disparities.

In short, the future of AI will impact women’s lives in profound ways, yet the development and control of these technologies remain overwhelmingly in the hands of men.
